Le 5 juillet : La Journée du bikini : Bikini Day
Another big birthday. On July 5, 1946, during a “prettiest bather” contest at the Molitor pool in Paris, the first-ever bikini made its debut. It was described as “smaller than the world’s smallest swimsuit,” featuring a fitted top and high-cut bottoms that clearly revealed the navel. The creator of this minimalist swimsuit was French. Louis Réard was an automotive engineer who also managed his mother’s lingerie shop. He gave it the name of an atoll in the Marshall Islands where the Americans had begun nuclear testing. This highly publicized event inspired his (questionable) advertising slogan: “The bikini: the first *an-atomic* bomb.”

Le 6 juillet :  Journée Internationale du Baiser : World Kiss Day
The “event” began in the 1990s but the “action” has existed, no doubt, since time immemorial.
During Covid, the question  on everyone’s lips was :
« Has the cheek kiss greeting gone for good ? »
Je pense que non ! Allez, on se fait la bise ?

Le 12 juillet : Journée des yeux vairons : Odd-Eyed Day
This is an odd one.

Le 13 juillet : Journée des frites : French Fry Day
International French Fry Day is celebrated every year on July 13th. We say French fries but their exact origin is a subject of much debate – and there is a Belgium Fries Day on August 1^st.  Both countries claim credit for their invention. (Remind you of pavlova, anyone ?)

Le 16 juillet : Journée mondiale des serpents: World Snake Day 
France has 13, not 16, native species of snake plus one from Switzerland that has become a permanent immigrant.  10 of them are the non-poisonous garter snakes and only 4 are poisonous vipers. Bites from these can be painful but are rarely fatal.
How do you tell which is which ?
The garter snake has round eyes, large scales on an oval head, and a longer slender body. The viper has slit eyes, smaller scales on a sometimes triangular head, and a shorter, stockier body.
Would you stop to check ?

Le 17 juillet : Journée mondiale des emojis: World Emoji Day
It’s not possible to have fluent, complex conversations or express specific thoughts using emoji, so it’s not a language yet. But it is a powerful tool for transcending language barriers because people understand what the symbols mean, regardless of their native tongue. Will it succeed where Esperanto failed ? It seems well on track.

Le 24 juillet : Journée Internationale des cousins et cousines : International Cousins’ Day

It’s called a cousinade when they all get together, as opposed to a family reunion.

Le 26 juillet : Journée où on fête le roquefort, le roi des fromages : Roquefort Cheese
Did you know that on July 26, 1925, Roquefort was the first French cheese to be protected under the new appellation d’origine contrôlée (AOC), which translates as “controlled designation of origin” ruling ?  However, the cheese has effectively been officially protected since June 4, 1411 when King Charles VI of France declared that only the villagers of Roquefort-sur-Soulzon could claim it as their own and that any others that tried to use the name would be punished (fined and/or imprisoned… but not the cheese guillotine!). Le 29 juillet : Journée nationale du rouge à lèvres : Lipstick Day

Lipstick was banned by the British parliament in 1770, considered impolite by Queen Victoria but encouraged by Winston Churchill to boost troop morale.  In France at the end of the 19^th century, the famous always-lip-sticked actress Sarah Bernhardt, wore it in public and created a scandal.  Wearing lipstick became a declaration of independence and audacity. Coco Chanel initiated “la petite bouche rouge”. Hitler loathed it and forbade it in his entourage, so lipstick became a symbol of resistance.

Le 30 juillet: Journée Internationale de l’Amitié : Friendship Day
Since 2011, this has been an official UN day to promote friendship within individuals, peoples, cultures, communities and countries.
Don’t leave it to just one day.
